How to know SCFM AND CFM?

 

SCFM (standard cubic feet per minute) and CFM (cubic feet per minute) are units of measurement to describe the flow rate of air or gas. SCFM is a measure of the volume of air flowing through an air compressor at standard conditions (usually 68°F and 14.7 psi). CFM is a measure of the volumetric flow rate of compressed air at the actual conditions of the air compressor.

 

To convert SCFM to CFM, you need to know the actual temperature, pressure, and relative humidity of the compressed air. The formula to convert SCFM to CFM is:

CFM = SCFM x (psia / 14.7) x (530 / Tactual) x (actual RH / 100)

 

Where:

- CFM = Cubic feet per minute at actual conditions

- SCFM = Standard cubic feet per minute

- psia = Actual pressure in pounds per square inch absolute (psia)

- Tactual = Actual temperature in degrees Fahrenheit (°F)

- actual RH = Actual relative humidity in percent (%)

 

For example, if you have a compressor that delivers 20 SCFM at standard conditions and you want to know the flow rate at actual conditions of 90°F, 100 psig, and 70% relative humidity, then you can use the formula as follows:

CFM = 20 x (100 / 14.7) x (530 / 90) x (70 / 100)

CFM = 20 x 6.80 x 5.89 x 0.70

CFM = 541.8

 

Therefore, the flow rate of the compressor at actual conditions is approximately 541.8 CFM.
